The Digital Age

Welcome to my new blog, "Greerland". Yes, yes, I'm going to continue creating videos on my YouTube channel, but I felt like I needed an additional output. Sometimes writing is just easier for me than shooting a video and taking hours to edit and get perfect. So. Here we are.

I was thinking recently about the new digital age. My grandma also mentioned something about it last week, too. Don't get me wrong, I obviously love the new age we are in. Social media is amazing - I love connecting to my family and friends instantly, sometimes, too much. I also love eBay, Amazon and other online stores. But it has to make you wonder - are we going to forget how to interact with each other in person one day? Or are we just going to sit in a room together and tweet each other?

This is so random, but I was driving the other day and I saw a sign for AC Delco, a name that GM still uses for auto parts, but I believe at one point, it was a big company that provided stereo/radio equipment for GM's cars. It just reminded me of an old car I had, back in the day before Facebook, Twitter, smart phones and WiFi. It was just interesting to think of those days when things were simpler. It reminds me of when my grandma says, "Back in the day, we didn't have TV's and gas was 30 cents a gallon." It just makes you wonder, what will we have in the future that we don't have now? What will gas cost in 30 years? Will we even still use gas? And back to my point, will people even know how to communicate to each other? What do you think? I think the future is fantasizing to think about. I'd love to hear your thoughts and input on the issue.

  1. I had a conversation with a college guy recently about just this. A guy is checking out a girl's facebook and she has recent pictures posted of her and her friends-he may see one he thinks is cute and gets her number off the friend. They text for the next few days, never meeting eachother. When they finally do set a "date" you get face to face and don't have the relationship you do via text message and ends up not working out. Awkward. ALSO, by the time my 3 yr. old son is dating what is it going to cost him because now for anyone wanting to go to dinner and a movie thats even just a small step up from a drive thru has to spend ATLEAST $100.00 !!! What teen has that sitting around?

  2. That is so true, I've had that happen to me...I've texted someone several times, almost like "text dating" and once we finally met, he decided I was too ugly and never talked to me again. Beyond awkward. And also true about X...he's going to need two jobs plus go to school! Movie theaters are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive anymore. I don't go as often anymore because I can't afford it and if I can, I can't get my favorite part, which was popcorn, because I'm NOT shelling out $13 for popcorn and a drink. NO WAY. I guess it's going to be Redbox rentals from now on :-\
