"The more I see of man, the more I like dogs." ~Mme. de Staël

So, today, I went to my mom's house to refresh her landscaping. I don't believe it had been weeded or trimmed in about 2 years, but what can you do. She can't get up and down like she use to, so I went out with my grandma and we tackled the weeds in about two hours or so.

While I was there, I went to visit our old golden retriever/hound dog, Copper, who my brothers and I grew up with. When he was a young puppy, he was hit by a car and his front right leg was amputated. So, he has grown up with three legs. I walked over to him and he nestled his way onto my lap and I looked into his eyes and I just started crying. He looks so weathered and old and I'm not even sure why I started crying. I guess because I wasn't around him more in my adulthood and he very much so seemed to remember me and was excited to see me.

He could run very fast as a young dog with his three legs, faster than you'd expect him to. And now he barely makes it from here to there. He has arthritis and doesn't move a lot anymore and I think my mom and brothers were talking about putting him to sleep before the next winter. It just had me depressed. But the positive side to the story is, he could have been killed as a puppy when that car hit him. Instead, he lived out a great life with my great family who has taken very good care of him. I like to try to think of the glass half full.

I also miss Charlie's Pug, Onfroi, a lot (and of course, Charlie). I had never been a fan of Pugs until he introduced me to his. They are the most lovable dogs and they have so much personality. I'm a very cuddly person and I enjoyed the nights when he would cuddle with us - he is just a great dog and I miss him. It makes me want to get a Pug and I might...when I am financial able to. Below is a video that we took of Onfroi (or Onnie as I would call him).

I truly believe that dog is man's best friend.

  1. I'm sorry to burst the bubble but it is call Anthropomorphism, giving human traits to animals, objects and other things. The dog may not remember you but it does in your eyes. You want to animal to respond to you and it will do as it was trained to do. I prefer to think of it that is does remember me but knowing that it might not. Same thing with a baby, it only remembers things for about 1-2 minuets, then forgets. So spending an hour with a baby and then leaving will most likely result in the baby forgetting. Then you could debate coming back to the dog or baby will result in it remembering a feeling or have a remembrance that it knows you through facial recognition, touch or smell. The dog which I think can only see in black and white is using other senses to help it along. Sorry, this thing called science can be a buzzkill....
